365 Project – June Review

My 2017 Project - Creating a piece of artwork based on a pre-1970's photograph for every day of the year and sharing it on Instagram.

As I approach the halfway point of this project I can’t help but have so many mixed feelings. 365 days is a long time for any project. As much as I love creating these images I can’t help but feel like that finish line is SO far away!
I ordered some photographs off of Ebay and used these lots for the majority of this month’s images. I had the most fun when I cropped a few of the “group” shots into individual portraits. The “Segoe Church Girls Brigade” were particularly charming with their peculiar paper crowns!
I’m so used to doing these portraits; they have become quite a delight to make. They don’t take nearly as long as they used to. I’ve come to realize that I prefer creating the close up portraits. I think this is due to the small size of this project. I can’t have the same sensitivity to values with full length portraits at this size. I think with the strong outline style it looks quite a bit more polished on the closer portraits. There IS something a little charming about the messy look of the full length portraits. I will continue to explore every once in a while.
As I keep trucking toward that finish line, I’ll be interested to see how I feel in three more months, when the brunt of the work is done! Six months down, Six to go!
